If at first you don't succeed, find out if the loser gets anything.

Okay, I may piss off a whole bunch of folks with this, but it won’t be the first time, and I seriously doubt it will be the last time, so here goes—

Let’s talk about the Mayor certifying the election returns with his signature.  He did this at the last City Council meeting, that being May 21st.   I do not know how many of you actually bother to look at the meeting packet before the meeting.  That packet, along with the agenda is usually online by the Thursday or Friday preceding the Tuesday meeting.  It is easily accessible.  I am beginning to think that more folks need to familiarize themselves with the meeting packet.  Go here for the meeting agenda and packet.

The meeting packet contains the documents that the sitting Mayor (Armstrong) to sign to certify the last election, set the date of the run-off election and authorize the expense of that run-off election.  The pages I am referring to are pages 25 through 46.  There are three documents contained in that range of pages, and each one is presented in English and then in Spanish.  Armstrong had to sign the canvass of the votes, that being agenda item C-3.  The associated items were handled after the swearing in our new mayor Paul Polasek, that being the declaring a run-off date (C-4) and the expense item (C-5).

So now, today, on Facebook I am seeing a clip of the meeting where City Attorney Thomas Gwosdz is instructing Will Armstrong to ‘sign this in Spanish’ with the declaration that this is a racist comment.  This evening at the City Council meeting, three people got up to ask the City Attorney why he made racist remarks at the last meeting.  Mary Lou Canales, Clara Ramos and Bennie Martinez all spoke at the podium and asked Gwosdz why he made racist comments.  Twice Gwosdz explained that the council does not engage in back and forth with citizens during the ‘citizen comment’ section of the agenda.  I know these three were very disappointed that they did not get an answer.

Well, I think I have the answer for these folks and the others who were wondering.  Now hang with me while I set up the scenario and follow along.  The attorney is having outgoing Mayor Armstrong sign to certify the canvassing of the election results.  He shoves the English copy in front of him and Armstrong signs.  Then Gwosdz shoves the Spanish copy in front of him and says, “Now sign this one in Spanish.”  Is it possible this is what happened?  Yeah, I think so.  In fact, I am so sure of it, I will...well, I don’t know what I will do, but truly believe what I have proposed is what actually happened.

Some of you are going to have to accept that your guy did not win.  I didn’t pick 100% winners, either.  But to continue to grasp at fluff in the air because you are not happy with the results is just crazy!  I know I am not going to change your minds, and in that regard, I feel bad for you.  I know how it is to believe a certain way, even when wrong, to make the ‘mistake’ make sense.  So please consider what I’ve written here.  You know, the City screws up enough on its own, and we have a new mayor who is still trying to find his rhythm in leading the meetings.  There will be plenty to criticize.  Just continue watching.

And if I were you all, I’d be way more concerned about the councilman who came bearing gifts…

So, until next time,
